Palestinian Press Wants Arms Pledge Implemented

— Insofar as rigid military and Government censorship would permit, Davar, Hebrew labor daily, editorially urged that pledges made in London for maximum defense opportunities to the Jews of Palestine be translated into concrete action.

Referring to a statement in the House of Commons by Colonial Undersecretary Harold MacMillan that measures required in Palestine for the prosecution of the war and insurance of internal security were being taken, Davar observed:

"This reply should not remain a mere formality. Its meaning in this hour must be the granting of a chance to tens of thousands of Jews not to remain idle while danger is approaching their homeland. There are tens of thousands whom it is not yet possible to withdraw from production for immediate co-option in the fighting services — but, in the meantime, they should be trained in order to be ready to defend the country when the time comes. All factors concerned are bound to implement Mr. Macmillan’s solemn reply actively and concretely."

Haifa Dedicates Its New Town Hall

— This harbor city, scene of feverish activity in preparation of defense measures, took on a temporary festival atmosphere as the new Town Hall was dedicated by High Commissioner Sir Harold MacMichael as "a worthy symbol of the coming glory."

The spirit of the city was reflected in the hopeful talks at the dedication exercises even though Haifa had experienced its first alert in many weeks that very morning, when hostile aircraft was reported approaching the city.

The occasion was marked by an address in Hebrew by the Mayor of Haifa, Shabbatai Levy, who reviewed the development of the municipality since its establishment in 1882, when the Town Hall had housed one room and had a staff of one clerk. The population then had numbered 4,000 as against well over 110,000 today.

In his address, as he formally opened the structure, the High Commissioner said that future generations would commemorate the vision and civic zeal of the pioneers.

Save Palestine Jews From Nazi Gas Chambers — Liberal London Weekly Urges

— It is the duty of the British government to "preserve the Jewish population of Palestine from Himmler's gas chambers and firing squads," it was stated this week by the New Statesman and Nation, leading British liberal weekly, in an article on the situation in the Middle East.

Discussing the military aspects of the campaign, the publication declares that "instead of wasting men and material in attempting to delay the occupation of Egypt, all strength should be concentrated on Palestine, Cyprus, Syria and the Persian Gulf."

Lord Strabolgi, Laborite peer, writing in the Evening Standard, suggested that Haifa be used as a base for the British Mediterranean fleet. "Haifa has a magnificent harbor though lacking in engineering facilities," he states, "and half a million Jews can be relied upon to guard the hinterland."

Arab Students Ask Rommel to "Free" Arabs From Jews

— In another one of the many planted Arab "messages" to Nazi General Rommel, who is leading the Axis fight against the United Nations forces in the Middle East, Arab students in Paris have cabled congratulations to the German leader and have asked him to "free the Arabs from the Jewish-British yoke."

It is reported here that Haj Amin el Husseini, ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, now in Berlin, sent a similar cable to the Nazi military leader.

Renewed Wave of Nazi Terror Expected in Poland

— A renewed wave of terror against Jews and Poles in Nazi-held Poland was predicted here this week as the result of a report in the Nazi newspaper Krakauer Zeitung, which arrived here from Cracow, that Hans Frank, Nazi governor for Poland, has held "an important conference" with all security chiefs and heads of local police forces in the occupied territory.
